Research Peer Review 1,2
Peer Review 1
On the last day of Term 2, I had last class to give advice and discuss with Minju and Diana on their topics. The three topics I chose were space, Hongdae in Seoul and gas station. The reason why I chose space is because I like space since when I was young. In addition, the universe has an incredibly long history. It’s also such a large space that we can’t explore the entire universe. Humans have longed to know the mysterious and curious universe for thousands of years. Furthermore, this has always intrigued me. Because I’m curious and want to know more about things I don’t know specifically. I thought it would be fun to refer to the silhouette of the spacesuit as my design form and use the Nebulae as a textile. My second topic was Hongdae, a city in Seoul. Hongdae is the youngest city in Korea. It is a place where many young people come, and there are many interesting things such as clubs, concert halls, arcade, and shops. Especially, there are many arcade in Hongdae, so I want to research about this place. My most favourite arcade is rhythm game ‘Pump’ that I always play when I go to the arcade with my friends. This game is my memorable and melancholic memory. I thought it would be fun to do my project by linking the unique neon lights of the arcade, game icons, and game machines. I also thought it would be useful and inspirational to link games enjoyed by young people in the past to games played young people today. The last topic I chose is a gas station. It’s funny that I chose only topics that I like and am interested in. I have liked gas stations since I was a child because I like to smell the car wash machine and oil. The car wash machine was like a roller coaster to me. When I go into the dark, bubbles begin to come out, and the brush, twice my size, covers the entire glass of my parent’s car. It made me feel like I was going on an adventure. In connection with my childhood experience, I wanted to research more about gas station, the process of producing oil, and this car washing machine. I discussed these three things with Minji and Diana in peer review class. First of all, there was an opinion that the universe was not only selected as a theme by so many other students, but also there were so many abstract elements that there would be few elements that could be inspired when designing clothes. Also not chosen as my final topic (space shuts, rockets, planets, etc.) because choosing space as a theme can be a really obvious project. The next topic, Seoul, is the country where I live, and there are many fun and inspiring elements in the arcade room, so I thought it was suitable as the final topic. However, Diana told me that this project will be more helpful if I research the past of the city, Hongdae, and how it became the current Hongdae, and why it became a youth street and cultural space for culture. It was so good to listen to my friends; advice and let me know what I didn’t even think of. The last gas station may be a rather boring topic, but I was advised that if I study it with various things such as the process of making oil at the oil platform, and the automatic car washing machine, I think there will be a very interesting research page. Also, since this topic includes my childhood experience, I thought it would be good to set my childhood experience and the process fo gas station development in the past. The last class of therm 2 ended with the first peer review. I think it is very important to have a discussion because sharing opinions with other friends can tell what I didn’t event think of. It definitely helped me and I hope it helps other friends.
Peer Review 2
On the first day of Term 3, we had a Peer Review with Minji, Reoboth, and Rei. We shared our opinions after looking at our research pages created during Holiday. I showed my work to my friends and explained it to them. My friends liked it because I used various colors and made it using various things related to gas stations. However, most of my research pages are abstract paintings, so I was advised to add drawings using pencils. This is because abstract drawing reduces the range of inspiration when designing. I think my page felt more like a textile too. I should add a drawing page using a pencil. I was inspired a lot by other friends’ research pages. One of the reasons why I think this class necessary in which we form a group and share opinions with each other, is that I can find my shortcomings by looking at other friends’ work and it stimulates me to work harder.
